In law, a leading question is one which suggests an expected answer to the witness, and the use of such questions is strictly controlled by Judges' Rules. In general use the term is often extended to mean a ‘loaded’ or ‘searching’ question, i.e. one that will lead to other matters:

• Following the end of the First World War, the leading question in the mining industry was whether or not the state would return the coal mines to their pre-war owners —K. Laybourn, 1990

• There were a couple of leading questions about the right and wrong ways for a player, particularly an international captain, to conduct himself on the pitch —Guardian, 2004.
